Ninth Grade: Self-Discovery

Ninth grade is the foundational year of high school that sets the stage for success in high school and post-secondary plans. We encourage all ninth-grade students to develop the skills and habits to be good students and good community members.

The CAC Office begins connecting with students through several Eighth Grade Welcome to Lincoln events including campus tours, course registration, counselor and administrator visits to the sending school the year prior to ninth grade, and an open-office policy to speak with their CAC counselor when students join our school in the fall of ninth grade. Students and parents will be able to access information and resources on the career and college search process as early as matriculation.

What to Expect

One fall “Meet the Counselor” presentation during advisory where CAC counselors explain the role of a counselor at LA and the services provided as well as the best practices of past students who have found success.
Freshman Seminar, which takes place during the first trimester, focuses on how to be a successful student at Lincoln Academy and introduces two surveys in Naviance to be completed in the ninth grade: AchieveWorks Learning & Productivity and AchieveWorks Personality.
One spring course registration presentation to learn how to select the best course schedule individualized for each student.
Individual meetings as needed with the assigned CAC counselor to discuss correct course placement, academic interests, strengths, challenges, time management, and study habits.
Access to resources including recommended readings, admissions blogs, and podcasts through the weekly LA Newsletter.
Make the most of the summer through work, volunteer, or formal summer programs.

School Counselors provide academic, social-emotional, college and career, and advocacy support. Throughout your time at LA students come to the CAC office:

to talk about how things are going at school.
to change a class.
to talk about what they want to do after high school.
to find a scholarship.
for academic advice.
to get a copy of their schedule.
to ask their counselor to do a credit check to see if they are on track to meet graduation requirements.
