College Planning Presentation

In the fall of the junior year, students and parents will be invited to a virtual evening learning more about the college search and application process. This event will allow students and parents the opportunity to gain more insight into the college recruiting and decision-making processes.

Individual Meetings

Between December and February of junior year, students will participate in an individual meeting with their CAC counselor to get to know one another and prepare for next steps. The focus of these meetings will be to develop or further a relationship and mutual understanding of next steps. We will (1) create a large and appropriate list of schools for consideration (2) identify schools to visit, and (3) articulate a standardized test strategy. At this point, the list could include up to 30 schools and February and April break plans would ideally include two-to-five college visits.

Between spring break and graduation, juniors will participate in one or two individual or group meetings with their CAC counselor. These meetings will further refine plans for both the college list and other aspects of the process. Ideally, the students will have feedback from visits over the two breaks, which will help to direct and refine the college list and inform plans for subsequent visits over the summer of 5-10 colleges. Heading off for the summer, students will have clarity on plans for timelines, support, and processes for applications, recommendations, essays, standardized testing, and further work to refine their college list.

College Fair

All juniors will be invited to attend the NEACAC College Fair at the Augusta Civic Center hosted by the University of Maine at Augusta. The three CAC counselors will chaperone the trip and guide students to meet with college representatives at each table in the event space to learn more about programs and majors. athletics, and more at each school.

College Visits to Lincoln Academy

Each fall, between 50-60 different colleges and universities from across the country and around the world visit LA to meet with Lincoln Academy students.

Testing

• NMSQT– October given during the school day at Lincoln Academy
• TOEFL/Duolingo recommended if applicable
• SAT in Spring: given in March and May at Lincoln Academy

School Counselors provide academic, social-emotional, college and career, and advocacy support. Throughout your time at LA students come to the CAC office:

• to talk about how things are going at school.
• to change a class.
• to talk about what they want to do after high school.
• to find a scholarship.
• for academic advice.
• to get a copy of their schedule.
• to ask their counselor to do a credit check to see if they are on track to meet graduation requirements.
