Midcoast Workshop at Lincoln Academy
The mission of the Midcoast Workshop at LA is to provide applied learning options for all learners that are responsive to and reflective of our local community. The Midcoast Workshop encompasses programs such as career exploration, volunteerism, internships and pre-apprenticeships as well as collaborative applied learning opportunities such as the LEAP Capstone Project. These programs supplement and enhance the core curriculum in our focus areas at LA, and use our ATEC building as a community learning hub.
Midcoast Workshop offers a variety of programs to meet student needs.
The LA Launch program provides FREE experiential learning and collaborative activities so that students can establish connections with new peers, be mentored by older peers, and be introduced to the Lincoln Academy campus. Students engage with local guides to learn about the resources in our area through real world application in an exploratory learning environment.
LA Launch is offered as a week-long session August 10-17, 2026. Lincoln Academy will provide some transportation routes to and from Lincoln Academy if needed. Lunch will also be provided.
LA Launch helps students:
- develop their sense of curiosity through authentic learning experience with the community and the local environment.
- feel supported in their transition to high school through a foundation of learning.
- improve their sense of wellbeing and safety through their connection to new classmates and teachers as well as older student mentors.
The LEAP (Learn, Explore, Apply, Present) Senior Capstone is a culmination of the student experience at Lincoln Academy. In this two trimester program, students challenge themselves to combine knowledge they have cultivated at LA with guided research and exploration on an independently chosen topic with focused application of skills and a presentation of their product and portfolio to the community. In the first trimester, students will develop an individualized project plan, curate resources to support their research, connect with community-based resources, and define their goals and timeline. In the second trimester, students will document the project exploration process, apply their skills to the proposed topic, reflect on successes and challenges, and prepare their portfolio to share with a wider community. The LEAP demonstration of learning symposium will take place in the winter or spring of senior year.
The Community-Based Learning Experience (CBLE) program helps juniors and seniors explore their post-secondary opportunities after Lincoln Academy. Whether students are entering the workforce immediately after school, or after two, four or more years of college or university – they will learn by experience about the professions that interest them. Students can apply to explore a career or profession, volunteer, or continue working in a field that they have already identified as being a part of their post-secondary plans. Through this experience, students can gain more in-depth knowledge about a career of interest, explore various opportunities available in the field and obtain hands-on experience.

Mason '25
Mason Benner (Class of 2025) is working with community based partner, Midcoast Energy, to develop his skills in HVAC. He is a pre-apprentice in HVAC and his CBLE earns LA school credit, paid training, and hours towards his HVAC certification. After graduation, he plans on continuing his education in Maine’s community college system.
Annie '24
Annie Peaslee (Class of 2024) comes from a long line of Maine boat builders. She worked with community based partner, Newcastle Marine, and is now studying at The Landing School of Boat Building and Design in Arundel, Maine.
Spencer '24
Spencer McDaniel (Class of 2024) worked with community based partner, Colby & Gale, Inc, to learn about and explore career options before deciding on post-secondary options. While working at Colby & Gale, Inc, Spencer developed skills in plumbing and heating.

Marine Industry Working Group
Marine Industry Working Group: Building a pathway for students in partnership with the local marine industry, utilizing industry-standard ABYC curriculum supported by funding from community partners, designing pre-apprenticeship programs for boatbuilding and aquaculture, ATEC renovations with support from foundations and donors to support classes in metalwork, marine technology, and aquaculture. Partners include: Washburn & Doughty, Back Cove Yachts, Padebco, Sabre, and Hodgdon.
