This year, four students will represent Lincoln Academy at the Dirigo State program, which takes place at Colby College in Waterville in June. The four rising seniors are Frances DeGeer, James Hanley, Josephine Shea, and Eva Whitmore.

Dirigo State (formerly known as the Boys and Girls State) is a comprehensive, experiential learning, youth leadership program sponsored by the American Legion and Auxiliary. It is designed after the Maine State government, where all students come together to create their own town, county, and state governing bodies. In the program, students run government simulations complete with elections, hearings, and votes on legislation.

This year’s LA representatives were selected through an application process that focuses on qualities of leadership development and interest in government and policy. Students are sponsored so they can participate at no cost.
