On Monday, December 15, Lincoln Academy inducted 41 new members into the LA chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS).

LA’s NHS chapter is advised by English teacher Brenda Sawyer and Director of Community Engagement and Development Heather D’Ippolito. Senior officers of the club lead the ceremony, which celebrates the NHS values of scholarship, leadership, character, and service. English teacher Bridget Wright was selected by the inductees to deliver remarks.

Students who meet a rigorous academic standard at LA are invited to apply for NHS. Invited students must complete an application, seek recommendations from faculty, coaches or community mentors, and fulfill community service requirements. Final selections are made by a faculty committee based on a review of application materials and feedback from teachers.

Members of Lincoln Academy’s NHS chapter are expected to be leaders in service across their communities. Each member is required to participate in individual service efforts, as well as to plan and execute group service projects. Current members have participated in individual volunteering efforts including volunteering at the Skidompha Library, the humane society, and the Jefferson food pantry. They have taught kids in the community basketball, theater, and guitar. In one of their major group service projects, students also helped the Ecumenical Food pantry fill over 350 Thanksgiving baskets last month.

New inductees have also been giving back to the greater community in significant and diverse ways, serving as youth voices on the YMCA board, volunteering at Miles Hospital and Cove’s Edge nursing home; counting alewives at the Bristol fish ladder, and participating in the Damariscotta Mills Fish Ladder restoration. Others have served as LA Ambassadors, 8th grade hosts, and peer writing tutors in the Writing Center. They have helped stack wood with the local non-profit CHIP and served on their town’s volunteer fire departments.

As part of the ceremony on December 15, each inductee chose an adult in the Lincoln Academy community: teacher, coach, or family member, to present them with their National Honor Society pin and a rose. Head of School Jeffrey Burroughs gave closing remarks welcoming the new members.
