Celebrating the End of Fall

We’ve had many beautiful fall days, interspersed with a few very rainy ones, creating a true mix of the season. The crisp, sunny days have given us wonderful opportunities to enjoy the outdoors in a variety of ways. This past weekend, some dorm students took a trip to Acadia National Park, while others rode a chairlift to take in the brilliant fall foliage above the quaint town of Camden. These outdoor activities offer a welcomed break from the rigors of academics. Supporting students in managing stress and finding balance is an important part of their development, and providing a range of activities encourages them to step away from academic demands and recharge.

In the United States, the end of October is marked by Halloween, and the humble pumpkin rules both home decor and the dessert table. This Sunday, our students will participate in pumpkin carving, transforming simple gourds into Jack-O-Lanterns, a tradition that has an interesting origin story: “The practice of carving ghoulish faces on vegetables may have roots in Ireland, where large turnips served as early canvasses. In fact, the name, jack-o’-lantern, comes from an Irish folktale about a man named Stingy Jack. Irish immigrants brought the tradition to America, home of the pumpkin, and it became an integral part of Halloween festivities.” (The History Channel).  Stay tuned for pictures!

In other news, the LA fall athletics season is coming to an end, with many accomplishments to celebrate ! We would like to congratulate all of our fall athletes including Camila and Julia on girls’ soccer; Liv, Iria, Pamir, Veronika, and Valerie on cross country; Nicolas C. and Nicolas Z. on the golf team; as well as Cosimo, Justin, Alejandro, Alvaro, Bill, Kane, Kieron, Maks G, Max P., Victor and Richard on boys’ soccer. We are so proud of the way you represented our community throughout the season, and we are very excited to see you back in the dorm more often for meals and activities!

Although the regular soccer season has come to an end, it is time for varsity playoffs! Next week, Camila will be traveling with the girls team to play against Greely, while Alejandro, Alvaro, Bill, Kane, Kieron, Maks G, Max P., Victor and Richard will head to Yarmouth for their match. We are wishing them all the best of luck!

We still have several weeks before the likelihood of snow, but daylight hours are getting shorter, temperatures are dropping, and we are beginning the process of shifting more of our energy indoors.  Please be thinking about winter sports, events, and travel.

The dorms are open during Thanksgiving Break.  If your student is traveling during that time, those plans need to be in Orah. Please look ahead to the December break and enter that information into Orah as well.
