Community Cares

This past weekend, 40 students participated in a service project with CHiP (Community Housing Improvement Project), building window inserts to help local families better insulate their homes for the winter. The project was guided by Sarah Kennedy and supported by returning student leaders. The event was a great success and highlighted Lincoln Academy’s commitment to community service and engagement.

There were two work opportunities this year, 25 students stayed on campus and learned to measure and cut wood and wrap the frames in plastic to help insulate the windows of older homes throughout the long winter. A second team traveled to CHIP’s firewood distribution site at N.C. Hunt Lumber to help stack donated wood. Later in the winter we will help distribute wood to help heat homes through the long winter.

Students are three weeks into school and starting to understand the routines of the dorm. Lincoln Academy is hosting the SAT exam on October 4. The SAT exam is used by many institutions of higher education to make admissions decisions. We recommend that Juniors that plan to attend college in the US consider taking this exam. Seniors who still need  an SAT score should also sign up for this exam. Registration ends September 19.

Juniors are invited to take the PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) exam.  The PSAT is designed to prepare students for the SAT, and students are asked to tell their advisors that they would like to take the exam by Wednesday, October 2.  The cost is $10 in cash or it can be deducted from your Emergency Fund.  The test is completely digital and Lincoln Academy will be supplying Chromebooks for this test, but students are welcome to bring a pencil for scrap paper, their own calculator, a snack & drink. Students should arrive by 7:30 am and go through the outside doors of the Gym to check in. The test will end in time for students to return to their regularly scheduled third-period class.

This coming weekend students will visit Walmart, a very large and often overwhelming store! The Fan Van will travel to support our soccer players. We will cook s’mores over a fire pit with some local students and we will do a ropes course at Monkey C Monkey Do! We are looking forward to a beautiful and eventful weekend (with time for homework on Sunday night!)
