Math and physics teacher Libby Mooney cheering graduates at 2020 Graduation

The Lincoln Academy community is deeply saddened by the passing of Elizabeth “Libby” Mooney on July 21st, 2025. Mrs. Mooney was a longtime physics and mathematics teacher and a member of the LA faculty from August 1998 to June 2021 and also coached the math team to multiple state and conference titles. While we are saddened by her passing, we are grateful that she was one of us. Ms Mooney was a tireless supporter of students in class and on the math team. She wanted everyone to love math and physics as much as she did, and would do anything from baking endless batches of brownies to staying long hours after school to help make that happen. Her enthusiasm was infectious, and multiple generations of Lincoln Academy students learned to love math—or at least dislike it less—because of Ms Mooney.

In her retirement, she was still an active member of the Lincoln Academy community, scoring swim meets and cheering on teams at Homecoming. She embodied the goals that we strive to achieve: creating a community where all are welcome and able to thrive. Mrs. Mooney left a lasting impact on the Lincoln Academy family and she will be deeply missed. A celebration of life service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 20, 2025, at the First Congregational Church of Wiscasset, at 28 High St. in Wiscasset.
