On Saturday I attended the celebration of life service for Libby Mooney, a former faculty member of Lincoln Academy. Wiscasset UCC Church was filled with people who were lucky enough to be parts of Libby’s life. I was touched by a number of things. First, that she was an engineer in the 60s and 70s when there were very few females in the engineering profession. Being an engineer myself, I know what the challenges are in becoming one, and certainly wonder what it would have been like for her in those days when she may have been the only woman in her classes or department at General Dynamics in New London, CT. Second was the deep and lasting impact that she had on so many who benefited from her career change to teaching mathematics.
Around two dozen alumni traveled from all over the US to attend her service, and they joined current students and faculty, filling the church to overflowing. I was reminded of the power of excellent teaching, the purpose in helping students find and nurture their passions, and the incredible gift that educators like Libby give to communities like ours. We were blessed to be able to have her on our faculty as a teacher and a leader of our award-winning math team for so many years.
This week is all about Homecoming week, and we have a great deal happening on campus, beginning Thursday with the only home XC meet of the season. There is the Homecoming parade and field hockey game on Friday, and a full day of soccer games Saturday, with lots of food concessions and apparel sales. It’s a great time to be on campus and take part in LA traditions, and I hope many of you will take the opportunity to experience it.
Be well,
