Students in Ms. Long’s biology classes examined onion skin cells and their own cheek cells under microscopes in this lab activity.

Students in Ms. Long’s Biology class learned basic microscope skills by examining onion skins as well as their own cheek cells. They learned to prepare their own samples as wet mounts, and use the microscopes to see them clearly. “Using microscopes and preparing specimen slides is a very important skill of biology, and giving students the chance to see their own cells definitely increases interest in this lab,” explained Ms. Long.

“It was so cool to see the onion under a microscope because we were able to see and identify all of the parts of the cells. Hands-on activities like this are always a helpful way to learn,” agreed sophomore Samantha Kopp.
