The Boothbay Y-Arts cast of “Godspell Junior” won an award at the 2024 Junior Theater Festival in Atlanta, Georgia and featured seven Lincoln Academy students.

On the weekend of January 12-14, a team of young actors from the Boothbay Region YMCA Y-Arts team traveled to Atlanta, Georgia to participate in the Junior Theater Festival, a three-day festival featuring theater workshops and performances. The group included 34 elementary and middle-school students from Boothbay Regional Schools and Great Salt Bay School, and seven high school students from Lincoln Academy.

The Y-Arts troupe prepared a production of “Godspell Junior,” a shortened version of the Broadway classic, and entered it in the festival with 124 other teams from US, Australia, New Zealand and the UK. They were recognized with one of only eight “Outstanding Production” awards, the top honor given at the festival, which meant they performed their musical compilation from Godspell at the awards ceremony in front of 6500 festival attendees.

The group, which ranged in age from six to 17 years old, is directed by Emily Mirabile, who serves as the Arts and Humanities Director at Boothbay Region YMCA. Lincoln Academy students who participated were: Reese Achorn, Imij Armstead, Sofia Michaud, Anderson Pierpan, Hamilton Pierpan, Josephine Shea, and Trey Tibbetts.

The Junior Theater Festival is an annual event. Any young people interested in participating in next year’s Junior Theater Festival with Y-Arts should contact the Boothbay YMCA to find out more about their performing arts programs.

The Boothbay Region YMCA will host a Celebration Performance for our Y Arts performers on Sunday, Jan. 28 at 5 p.m. in the YMCA gymnasium. Come out to see their award-winning adjudication piece and cheer them on as they receive individual awards. The event should last 45 minutes.
