Residential Life Update – April 10, 2023

2023-04-10T20:23:00-04:00April 10, 2023|

Last Week until April Vacation

We are getting busy! The cold and snow are fading away and the warm weather is invigorating. As things warm up, students are spending more time outdoors enjoying our beautiful weather and surroundings.

We are getting ready for some wonderful travel opportunities! Ten resident students will be joining Mr. Cordero and his family on a trip to Washington DC and five other students will get to spend the week in Bar Harbor Maine visiting our famous Acadia National Park. Other students will be visiting US destinations or traveling home to visit family and friends.

May is a very busy month as students take SAT and  AP tests as well as finishing up classes. We will have a week of senior activities some of which are open to families. Maine is a beautiful month in May and we look forward to sharing with those of you traveling to see us for Graduation celebrations.

Join Us for End-of-Year Celebrations! We know the last few weeks of the school year are going to move quickly and we are getting ready to celebrate our students.  We’d love to have your family join us for Graduation and other events!  Graduation is Friday, June 2, with a rain date of Saturday, June 3.  Click here for details: https://lincolnacademy.org/campus-and-community/graduation-events/

Career and Academic Counseling

AP Exams
AP Exam information is available in the CAC office, and with your AP teachers.  Exams will be held during the first two weeks of May.  Please have students check with teachers about AP Exam locations and times.  Testing locations will be on campus in Hall House, St. Patrick’s Church in Newcastle, and at the Second Congregational Church at the bottom of Academy Hill Road.  It will be the student’s responsibility to arrive at least 20 minutes in advance of the exam starting time.  It will be the student’s responsibility to provide their own transportation to and from exams.  This may require parents, guardians, or friends providing rides to early morning exams and bringing students home from late afternoon exams.  There will be a bus available for students with exams that start at noon at St. Patrick’s Church.  Some exams can last up to four hours.  Bring pencils, black or blue pens, approved calculators, water, snacks and your AP ID number.  *If you have testing accommodations please check with your teacher or the CAC office, your exam may be in a different location than your other classmates.*

Summer opportunity for Juniors & Seniors!!
Bath Tech is excited to offer a new opportunity through AGC Maine this summer! This is a great opportunity for ANY junior or senior who does not have a solid plan for after high school or is looking to go into an apprenticeship program. The student DOES NOT need to have any prior trade experience or be a Bath Tech student.

The Immersion Program through AGC Maine will run from July 10th through August 18th at Bath Tech. Students will earn certifications and be exposed to many construction related careers (electrician, masonry, HVAC, heavy equipment, bridge/highway construction, pipefitting, crane operation, etc.) The program will end with a hiring event. Students will get paid biweekly for the program, a total of $1200 and receive a stipend for boots and a tool set upon completion. Students must be 16 years or older to sign up. Bath Voc will be hosting an Informational Night on April 13th from 6:00-6:45 pm. Space is limited, so please let CAC know if you are interested.

FRESHMEN:
Bath Tech is offering a FREE summer program for rising sophomores (current ninth graders) focusing on Science, Tech, Engineering, Art, and Math. Students can take part in their choice of programming including: Automotive, Culinary/Baking, Welding, Carpentry, Graphic Design, Electricity, and Cosmetology. Transportation can be provided, please inquire. CAC recommends that students with any interest in attending Voc in the future take advantage of this opportunity. Applications have been given to freshman advisors.

SOPHOMORES:
Sophomores who applied for Bath Vocational for the next school year, should be hearing more information after April school vacation.

JUNIORS:
Juniors who took the March SAT, can check their Collegeboard account for their results. If you have questions or concerns about these results, please reach out to your school counselor. The May SAT will be at LA and the deadline to sign up for this test is April 7.

The local P.E.O. International Chapter (https://www.peointernational.org/) is offering a $500 scholarship to a female high school junior who exemplifies excellence in leadership, academics, extra-curricular activities, and community service. This scholarship application is due by 4/30/2023. For more information, please speak with your school counselor.

SENIORS:
Many seniors are hearing back from schools with final decisions and financial aid packages. FAME’s presentation to LA about comparing financial aid packages was recorded and is published on our website. Please feel free to check it out!

Scholarships are updated regularly and posted in Naviance! Encourage your senior to check often. April 15th, April 30th, and May 1st are popular deadlines for scholarships. Additionally the CAC office is running an FLB that meets weekly on Mondays to give seniors time to research and apply for scholarships. FLB’s have been shared with students, but feel free to speak with your senior about this option.

Peer Tutors
If your student is interested in becoming a Peer Tutor, please email Ms. Alicia Lemar in the CAC office at Lemar@lincolnacademy.org. This will happen during FLB and only in subjects students choose. Sign up now to join this exciting program!

In turn, if your student would benefit from the help of a peer tutor, please reach out to Ms. Alicia Lemar at: lemar@lincolnacademy.org

JUNIORS:

School Counselors will be meeting with juniors individually to further discuss their life after Lincoln Academy plans. School counselors will help students reflect on their previous three years, their future goals, and explore varying options. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to your student’s school counselor.

Juniors who are considering four year college or university, please log into your Collegeboard account and sign up for the SAT. Counselors will speak with juniors about standardized testing during their junior meeting, but they are being encouraged to sign up for the May SAT at LA (the May SAT will only be open to LA students) or test dates that work best with students’ personal schedules. Please reach out to your counselor if you have questions or concerns.

SENIORS:

Finance Authority of Maine (FAME) will be hosting a virtual session for Lincoln Academy seniors and their families on Wednesday, March 15th at 6:30pm (https://famemaine.zoom.us/j/86309878862?from=addon). This session will focus on financial aid packages, how to read and compare them, and next steps. Families have found this session to be very helpful and informative when comparing financial aid packages from varying schools and how to make the best financial decision.

Please continue to check your online portals at the colleges and universities where you applied. If materials are missing, we have electronic receipts for all submitted materials from LA and can help. Colleges and universities might be asking for Mid-Year reports. These are not the same as mid-trimester grades. LA does not send mid-trimester grades.  We only send end of trimester grades. If you receive a request for a mid-year report, please email your admission officer and remind them that we are on trimesters, and confirm that your first trimester grades have been submitted. In addition, if you think your mid-tri grades represent you well, please feel free to share these grades with your admission officer, and provide them with any updates since submitting your application.
