Cold Weather and Winter Carnival
Arctic Blast: The weather this past week has been no joke, with temperatures sinking well below freezing across the state. Our campus has not been spared from the impact of record low temperatures and had to cancel academic classes today and Tuesday due to a ruptured frozen pipe that caused damage to an academic building. Classes will resume on Wednesday and a creative schedule has been designed to ensure we have continued in-person learning! We’re fortunate to have been able to offer students a variety of indoor activity options over the weekend when it was too frigid to be outdoors including visiting Midcoast Recreation Center for indoor ice skating, bowling, shopping, and movies. Today, many of our students took advantage of an extra day off by going skiing at Sugarloaf!
This past week our Senior members of the LA Swim Team were honored for their commitment and participation, including Nick Young and Michal Maciejewicz from the Residential Life program. Congratulations to the whole team!
Winter Carnival starts February 13! This week-long celebration includes games and friendly competitions between classes for faculty shield points. Events start next Monday with a dodgeball tournament and fun dress-up days. We’ve been pleased to have Residential Life students join recent volunteer opportunities delivering firewood and building window inserts for neighbors who need help staying warm. Local organizations have received a record number of requests for heating assistance this winter and the recent below-zero temperatures have made volunteer opportunities like this even more meaningful. Thank you to our student volunteers for their enthusiasm to give back to the community!
As new students have joined our program in the past few weeks we’ve been introducing activities that build camaraderie and hopefully help our students get to know each other and themselves better. LA’s community is diverse and many opportunities exist – it is part of what makes us special and why we do the important work we do
