Indigenous People’s Day Weekend
We’ve had beautiful autumn weather over this holiday weekend in celebration of Indigenous People’s Day. Students visited the Farnsworth Art Museum, walked the Rockland Breakwater, looked for Halloween costumes on a shopping trip to Augusta, sang karaoke, and gawked at record-setting cucurbits. Pumpkins decorated by Maine artists will be on display throughout October and we’ll be carving some jack-o-lanterns of our own in the dorm later this month.
In addition to the Pumpkinfest excitement, yesterday all of our Residential students took part in team-building activities at a ropes course and zipline park. This group has built close friendships since the start of the school year and it was wonderful to see them challenge themselves and each other as they completed the ropes course together.
Students have also taken extra time during the long weekend to work on academics. The halfway point in the first trimester is October 14 and mid-trimester grade reports will be sent to families via email this month. These midterm grade reports do not appear on final transcripts but do provide a snapshot view of academic progress so far in the grading period. We work with students to build good study habits and encourage you to be in touch if you have any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Jake Abbott

Tech Tip of the Week
When to use the Canvas Parent app vs. web
We hope you have created a Canvas account as an observer and linked to your student’s account. If not, please see instructions on our website.
When is it best to use the app versus the web?
The Canvas Parent app is best for:
- a quick glance at grades and assignments, including assignment status (submitted, missing, or late)
- a quick glance at upcoming assignments organized by due date
- setting an alert when an assignment is missing
Canvas on the web additionally allows:
- viewing comments from teachers on submitted assignments
- viewing rubric feedback
- viewing quiz details
- viewing modules (units, topics, and assignments).
