Grades, School Vacations, and Res Life News

This weekend we turn back the clocks for Daylight Savings.  The earlier sunset time marks a darker time and begins the slow crawl to winter in Maine.  As we look towards the colder darker months, there is excitement for seasonal holidays but also winter fun.  Some of the things we are excited to do this winter are: ski trips, skating trips, sledding, snow shoeing, and lots of cooking!  Check out this video from last year’s Res Life cohort on a snow tube adventure:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBKPFCh4JJ8

Please take note of the important reminders below about grades, upcoming school vacations, and approved travel dates.  We need all holiday travel plans entered in Orah as soon as possible.  There is also a special opportunity for our students to take part in a New England College Tour with school counselor Jose Cordero.  Details below and at this link: https://forms.gle/BvkFfwVXkkLLGzs7A

Be well and, as always, please don’t hesitate to be in touch with any questions or concerns.

Grades
The end of the first trimester is just 2 weeks away on November 19 and coincides with the start of Thanksgiving break.  Please review student grades in Canvas and pay close attention to assignment deadlines.  Teachers and staff are here for you with any questions or concerns.

Thanksgiving Break: November 20-28, 2021
Thanksgiving break is our first vacation of the school year.  The dorms will remain open, though some students may take advantage of this time to visit friends and family off-campus.  Travel plans should be submitted through Orah as soon as possible.  The Residential Life program provides holiday activities for all students remaining with us in the dorms including a traditional Thanksgiving meal at Camp Kieve and each student will be invited to attend Thanksgiving celebrations with local families from our community.

Holiday Break: December 18, 2021 – January 2, 2022
The dorms will be closed for this break and all families must submit travel plans using Orah no later than November 12.  Many families have requested homestays in the community.  Homestays cost $65 per day and we are working to provide as many as possible, however they are extremely limited this year.  We are not able to guarantee homestay placements and families should consider backup plans in the event that a homestay match is not available.  There will be two other breaks later in the year when the dorms will be closed, Winter Vacation: February 19 – February 22, 2022 and Spring Vacation:  April 16 – April 24, 2022, please plan accordingly.

SENIORS:  To Report, or Not to Report Testing? That is the Question.

Choose your own adventure in reporting your SAT scores (or not). Here are the steps:

  • Go to the school’s admission website to find out if they are testing optional and if the major/program that you are applying for is testing optional. Sometimes schools are testing optional, but they will require tests for Nursing, Engineering, or another specific program.
  • If your school is testing optional, talk with your counselor about your test scores and if it is in your best interest to submit your tests. This is a strategic move and we want to take advantage of this opportunity.

SENIORS:  LIVE Virtual NEACAC College Fair, November 7th

  • College Reps available LIVE Sunday, November 7th from 1:00pm to 3:00pm
  • Register at https://neacac.swoogo.com/Registration
  • Log back in and visit booths at any time through November 30th!  Check back for updated information and to explore your options!

This college fair allows students and families to ask questions, uncover new college options through their search tool, and watch videos and download helpful materials.  No matter where students are in the college search process, there is more to learn about your options!
