Final Week of Trimester 1
We’ve enjoyed a long weekend on campus starting with the Veterans Day Holiday on Thursday. Students and staff took advantage of this time to rest, recover, and get caught up on their academic work. This coming week marks the final week of the first trimester. Grades close on Friday, November 19. Please be in touch with teachers with any questions about assignments and submit work before this deadline.
Next week is Thanksgiving break. We will be celebrating the start of the “Season of Giving” with a volunteer opportunity in partnership with area food pantries to give meals to families in need. All students who remain on campus next week will enjoy holiday traditions, fun activities, and special holiday meals.
Big news in the dormitories: After weeks of waiting for our final vaccinations and regular weekly covid surveillance testing, Residential Life students are now living without masks on the dorm floors and shared common spaces. The joy and smiles when we tossed off the masks at last week’s community meeting were overwhelming!
Last week Flora Angyal of Hungary planned a delicious dinner featuring foods from her home country. Flora and helpers Nick, Gabriel, and Eszter joined our culinary team in the dining commons and served traditional rakott krumpli. Flora shared, “Rakott krumpli translates to English as potato casserole. It was a really great experience to cook with others a food that reminds me for the foods’ from home.” Thank you Flora for this special treat, looking forward to more students sharing their favorite foods from home!
An important reminder that Holiday Break is December 18 – January 2. The dorms will be closed at 3pm on December 18 and open at 11am on January 2. Many families have requested homestays in the community. Homestays cost $65 per day and we are working to provide as many as possible, however they are extremely limited this year. We are not able to guarantee homestay placements and families should consider backup plans in the event that a homestay match is not available.
As we get ready for the end of the trimester and Thanksgiving, I want to share my gratitude for all of our students, staff, and their families. Thank you for being a part of the Res Life community and our family at LA.
Sincerely,
Jake Abbott

SENIORS: To Report, or Not to Report Testing? That is the Question.
Choose your own adventure in reporting your SAT scores (or not). Here are the steps:
- Go to the school’s admission website to find out if they are testing optional and if the major/program that you are applying for is testing optional. Sometimes schools are testing optional, but they will require tests for Nursing, Engineering, or another specific program.
- If your school is testing optional, talk with your counselor about your test scores and if it is in your best interest to submit your tests. This is a strategic move and we want to take advantage of this opportunity.
