I lived and taught school in Nicaragua as a young man. Now I teach history and world studies at Lincoln Academy. Over the recent winter holidays, I went back to see how life and my old haunts had changed in the intervening thirty years. I was lucky to find some old friends still alive and well and many places I loved still intact. Here are a few pictures of Granada – invaded by the pro-slavery American “filibustero” William Walker in the 1850s – a lovely Spanish colonial city on the shore of Lake Nicaragua and in the shadow of one of Central America’s many active volcanoes.
